'He is a young boy still learning his craft'- Why Matthew Potts' contract renewal is the most important of them all

Matthew Potts is centrally contracted as an England player until the end of October and it’s been clear for quite some time that he’s out of favour with the national team.

With the good recent performances of Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue et al, it has become apparent that an England recall is some way off.

Therefore, the sharks were circling, with the rumour mill cranking into overdrive regarding Potts’ Durham future.

However, they have secured his services for another three years, and with no England duties on the horizon, he will play a key role if Durham return to Division One, which looks like a formality at the time of writing.

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell is one of Potts’ biggest backers and has been full of praise for him after a tough winter which saw him receive criticism for his performance in the final Ashes Test at Sydney.

After Potts became the first bowler to pick up 50 County Championship wickets in 2026, Campbell said: "He's been put under the pump, I think we all saw the last Test in Sydney.

“I've got no doubt that some people have made their final decision on Matthew and that's probably the wrong decision.

“He is a young boy still learning his craft, this year you've seen him swing the ball and if conditions are right for him to nip it around, you know what he's going to do."

Potts is also leading the way in the race for the inaugural County Championship player of the year award. With 58 wickets at 17.18 this season, the accolade would be a deserved one.

He came into 2026 with a renewed vigour and while he didn’t get the rewards in the early stages of the season, he’s got his flowers during the second half of the red ball campaign.

Yes, as Campbell said, a lot of people have written Potts’ international career off after that ill-fated Ashes debut, but he deserves a second chance and maybe that could be in the offing under new England Test head coach Stephen Fleming should he continue this fine form.

But in the meantime, it’s Durham where he’ll be playing his cricket and his performances will be key should promotion be secured over the final three fixtures, as Division One is completely different beast and Campbell’s side certainly know that.
