From 189/1 on day one to nearly losing the game on day four, make no mistake about it Durham’s performance at Essex was lacklustre.

Excellent knocks from Alex Lees and Ben McKinney put Durham in a great position on day one, but after that Essex were dominant, having the edge in all the remaining sessions in the match, and the likes of Dean Elgar and Jamie Porter showed experience and nous to put all the pressure on Durham.

The draw coupled with an eight point deduction for Hampshire makes the table look a bit better for Durham this week, albeit the situation is still far from rosey.

Six points is the gap to safety and this week’s penultimate round of fixtures will determine whether Ryan Campbell’s side will be in the box seat for Division One survival come next week's season finale at Yorkshire.
