Callum Parkinson claimed three key wickets as Durham thrashed Gloucestershire by an innings and 225 runs inside three days in a one-sided Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.
Having not featured as a bowler until the 27th over of the second innings, the experienced left-arm spinner quickly sent back Ben Charlesworth, Cameron Bancroft and Miles Hammond to leave the home side 141 for three after they had followed on when they were a massive 430 runs behind.
A century opening stand between Charlesworth and skipper Bancroft, who top-scored with 56, had offered hope of a Gloucestershire fightback.
But once Parkinson had made inroads, the seamers took over, Matthew Potts (three for 49), Kemar Roach (two for 55) and Kasey Aldridge (two for 32) completing a resounding victory as the hosts plunged to 205 all out.
Ben Raine had earlier grabbed the last two wickets in Gloucestershire’s first innings of 175 to finish with five for 45. Durham took a maximum 24 points from a resounding success.
After the resounding win, Durham head coach Ryan Campbell said: “I am very proud of that performance. It was the sort of cricket Durham have been renowned for and, while we may have lost our way a bit last year, this team doesn’t lose their ability because a few things went against us.
“We have worked so hard in the off season to correct a few wrongs. We began well against Kent and, despite losing the toss, we were the only team going to win that game. I told the guys if we keep playing that well we will build winning positions.
“We have a very good bowling attack. We pride ourselves in putting energy on the ball and on flat pitches if you do that you can still put pressure on batting sides.
“Callum Parkinson found himself out of our team last year and no one has worked harder on his fielding, batting and in particular his bowling to get himself back in. He didn’t play in the first game or bowl in the first innings here, but as soon as he got the opportunity he grabbed it.
“Ben McKinney stacked up plenty of runs in this game and it has attracted attention, but he is still learning the game and we don’t want to rush youngsters just so we can say we found one for England. It’s an exciting time for English cricket because there are so many good young players around the counties.”
