When a vacancy arises in the England team there is always a lot of chatter and you often her the phrase ‘next cab off the rank’.
It appears that Emilio Gay is that cab, with the Durham left-hander holding up a giant ‘pick me’ sign with his start to the season.
Three centuries in his first six innings of the season have seen him jump to the top of the run-scoring charts in Division Two, while only Nottinghamshire’s Joe Clarke has more runs across both divisions.
Given his inclusion in recent England Lions squads, Gay seems to be top of the queue for Zak Crawley’s spot, should the Kent man be dropped for a string of poor performances
